Wrekinsport Chris Edwards Hilly 18 – Preview

The 2012 Friction and Hydraulic Services Shropshire Championship Points Series gets off to a great start on Saturday at Worfield with a record turnout for the Wrekinsport Chris Edwards Hilly 18 - including a defending champion out to prove a point. The Shropshire Champion set a course record last year on lumpy territory not suited to his build and will use this as a benchmark to judge his fitness. With an 89 rider field, 54 of those riders represent Shropshire clubs and are looking to get their first points of the season under their belts, with Bason facing a strong challenge from Richard Watson, leading a Paramount squad of four.

There’s also a great turnout of nine riders travelling down from North Shropshire Wheelers, with strong Veterans’ Phil Guy and Bryan Cliff heading up a team that also includes Tim Rex, Mark Musgrove, as well as the 15 year-old Thomas Garbett who is out to take an early lead in the Junior’s standings.

Guy and Cliff will have an eye on the Veteran’s competition, with reigning champion Pete Griffin present for Newport and also facing challenges from a strong Ludlow line up with runner-up Pete Ding present amongst nine riders representing the club. These two had a season-long battle in 2011 which is bound to continue this year.

The promoting club however feature the largest turnout with no less than 19 riders entered. Key amongst these is triathlete Mark Griffiths, winner of the Chris Edwards Trophy in 2011 Andy Tamplin, and 18 year-old Daniel Lamsdell who moves into the Senior’s category for the first time. That squad also features Karen Summers, who is at home on lumpy territory and who will be out to cause a surprise in the Ladies competition. Ladies Champion Jenny York features in a squad of 7 Mid Shropshire Wheelers and begins the defence of her title with Oswestry Paragon’s Helen Tudor and the unknown quantity of Laura Gartry representing newly-affiliated Oswestry Olympians. Racing commences at 2pm. Once again the Association are extremely grateful for the support of Ian Spark of Friction and Hydraulic Services.

Two rounds to kick things off in March and both of them hilly with Wre kinsport CC promoting round 1 at Worfield and Oswestry Paragon CC's event taking place a fortnight later at Llanyblodwel. Both cost £7.

Meanwhile there is a correction to the round 15 date, published as 16th September in issue 19. The date of the North Shropshire Wheelers 25 has been confirmed as 26th August.

New Entry Forms

The CTT have published a new simplified entry form for Open's, which has been designed to help the introduction of internet entry to a limited number of events this year. If you are still using the old form however no need to worry – it's still legal until the end of 2012. New Veterans' Standards

2012 sees a major change in the Veteran's standards following a long review by the Veterans Time Trial Association. A huge amount of analysis has been performed to draw a line in the sand under the old set based upon the improvement of results over many years and a perceived benefit to older riders. The reason for the change stems from worries amongst VTTA officials that younger Veterans were not joining the Association as they believed the existing standards to be unfair. This set will be used for all standard distance events from now on and have yet to be printed as they were only agreed on 28th January. However the new standards and rationale for the change can be found on the VTTA's site at: http://veteran-cycling-standards.org.uk/

Forthcoming Events – Parker International Series

There are three events to get the season off to a flying start in late March with North Shropshire Wheelers promoting their events from The Raven Cafe, Prees Heath. The first is a lumpy 19 starting outside Lower Heath School taking in the climb of Hawkstone Follies twice. The second is a straight out and back starting on Press bypass and turning at the new Battlefield mini-roundabout. The first SCCA Spring events kicks off on 31st March on the traditional Waters Upton – Hodnet course, with signing on at the southern end of Sytch Lane. All welcome to these entry-on-the-line events.

Forthcoming Events – SCCA 2-Up Series

The newly expanded six round Series got off to a popular start last year with North Shropshire Wheelers promoting Round 1 on their club course. HQ again is The Raven cafe, with the start only a couple of hundred yards away. The course takes in the A49, Lower Heath and the old A442 before returning along the A41 to Prees Heath. Riders are reminded that to qualify they must ride at least four events with the same partner, and both members must belong to any SCCA affiliated club to score points.

The Association would like to welcome Oswestry Olympians Athletics and Triathlon Club to the increasing number of County clubs joining in the County series. Reliability Rides

The extensive Reliability season continues on 19th February with the SCCA/NSW event from The Raven Cafe. Two distances of 50 and 84 miles are available, with starts between 9:00-9:15am. This event is being run in memory of Cliff Ash, with £1 of the entry fee going to Severn Hospice, where Cliff spent some time. This money will be passed on at Cliff's funeral, which is the chosen charity for donations. If anyone else wishes to make a further donation at the reliability who cannot make the funeral there will be an opportunity to do so whilst signing on.

Nova Raiders Sportive

Newport based Nova Raiders run a Sportive event in aid of Newport's Rugby Club House on 12th May with a 9:30am start for a 66 mile ride costing £10 pre-entry (or £12 on the day) and at 10am for 22 miles for £2 less. The event starts and finishes at the rugby club, with all welcome.

Tower to Tower Cycle Challenge

Oswestry Paragon's Craig Owen is aiming to ride the 500 mile Tower to Tower Challenge in 5 days. Starting from Blackpool Tower and ending in Paris at the Eiffel Tower, Craig sets off on 31st March – and has 30 places available to anyone who cares to join him. New Year's Day 10 – Report

It was a great win for Daniel Lamsdell on his first day as a Senior as the 18 year-old showed his mettle. Lamsdell literally led the field home as first man off in the traditional out-of-season 'Wonky Wheeler' 10 mile time trial on New Year's Day at Cold Hatton, crossing the line in 26 minutes 21 seconds. This saw off the challenge of team mate Dave Gostelow by 46 seconds as the Veteran had to settle for the runner-up spot.

A stiff – and chilly - wind from the south west gave many riders issues, particularly in the final half mile to the turn at Shawbirch as the course swung into that wind as riders tested themselves to see just how much fitness they had lost since the end of the season. This relaxed event saw a number of riders turn up in fancy dress and riding a variety of machines, not least Dave Moore who rode a vintage 1927 Raleigh Roadster in period costume, finishing in 37:56; and Wrekinsport Chairman Dave Poulter attempting the course on a mountain bike stopping the watch on 33:04.

SCCA Private member Daniel Watts took 3rd spot in a creditable 27:18, just 11 seconds behind Gostelow but which saw off Adrian Billington by seven seconds. Billington's ride was all the better given he lacked a warm up, having to drive home pre-race after forgetting half of his kit. History Of The Mids – Part 2

March 1926 saw the committee deciding to buy two National Cyclists Union first aid kits to be carried on the club runs by the captain and vice-captain. And if they couldn’t produce them instantly on demand by a fully paid up member they had to cough up a sixpenny fine. The balance sheet at the end of the second year's activities suggests that the club was flourishing, a healthy balance of £7 9s & 7d being recorded (That was in the days when money was money, they made fivers the size of handkerchiefs and if you had one you could live like a king for a month). The heady wine of success went to their heads this year and, no doubt inspired by the loot in the kitty, they decided to hold an annual dinner. This took place at the Forest Glen on February 9th 1927. 1927 seemed to be a vintage year. Apart from the first annual dinner, it was also the first year the name of Jack Pitchford (the oldest paid up member as at 1977), appeared in the club results and the year when the club first promoted the 25 mile Shropshire Championship. Jack won a 10 on Watling Street on May 29 with 25:27, thirteen seconds faster than scratch man J. Bromley. He took the first handicap with his 1:30 allowance. The first Open Shropshire Championship was held on August 28th on the Shawbury triangle. The silver cup was won by E.G. Owen in 1:7:53, exactly a minute faster than the runner up A.J. Burston, whose 2:30 allowance gave him first handicap as well. Eighteen riders started.

The first signs of a rumpus that was to centre the club more firmly on Shrewsbury appeared in July of that year when the minutes indicated that committee men were getting brassed off with riding over to Ironbridge for every meeting. President Albert Walters wanted to switch the venue to Shrewsbury but secretary-treasurer J.E. Armitage resisted strongly. He said he would rather resign rather than to see the club holding unofficial meetings (the rules specified that the meetings would be held in Ironbridge – which happened to be where Mr Armitage lived!). The row led to a special general meeting on August 24 – at the Bridge café, Ironbridge. The row was referred to as the reason for the meeting but nothing seems to have come of it and members duly elected as their secretary – J.E. Armitage. But that wasn’t the end of the affair. For even though all the elections had taken place at the special general meeting in August, an annual meeting was held on December 14, 1927, and members accused Mr. Armitage of running some of the clubs business to suit himself and refusing to accept the majority wish to centre the club on Shrewsbury. Mr Armitage resigned. Another general meeting was held January 12, 1928, and members decided to reconstitute the club and base it on Shrewsbury and another election took place. 1928 saw the club chose mauve and black as its track man's colours. And when the club decided to refuse applications from former members who had been suspended by the NCU for competing at professional meeting because they caused “Inconvenience and ill-will between members”. It was also the year that Jack Pitchford won the Shropshire Championship in a time that is not recorded.

The club held its first 50 in June 1929, D. Davies winning in 3:32:57 beating scratch man F.E. Smith (2:38:56). It attracted eight riders and, apparently overwhelmed by this dizzy success they had another go in July. This time Davies was off scratch and improved to 2-31-30. But Smith chopped nine minutes off his June time and won with 2:29:45. The first Shrewsbury to Ludlow and back record time was set on July 14, 1929, by F.L. Street, with 3 hours 7 minutes. A fortnight later Bill Cockburn sliced 14 minutes off it. That year the third Shropshire Open 25 Championship title went to North Shropshire Wheeler T.R. Penk with 1:6:32, with Jack Pitchford, riding for the Anfield club, second in 1:6:50. Upholding the Mids honour was F.E. Smith, third with 1:8:34.

The Shropshire Reliability season continues on Sunday with the attention turning to the south of the County as Ludlow CC present a choice of 47 and 70 mile rides into Welsh border county. With groups starting between 9.20 and 9.45am from Ludlow Leisure Centre, both present the opportunity to get some excellent miles under the belt with rolling terrain mixed in with a number of taxing climbs. Whilst both routes take in Knighton and Penybont and return via Presteigne and Richards Castle, the longer course adds a loop towards Llanbister with some spectacular scenery.

SCCA New Years Day 10 TT

The first race of 2012 for Shropshire Time Trialists was the SCCA "Wonky Wheeler" New Years Dat 10 mile TT ....

It was a great win for Daniel Lamsdell on his first day as a senior as the 18 year old showed his mettle. Lamsdell literally led the field home as first man off in the traditional out-of-season "Wonky Wheeler" 10 mile time trial on New Years Day at Cold Hatton, crossing the line in 26 minutes and 21 seconds. This saw off the challenge of team mate Dave Gostelow by 46 seconds as the Veteran had to settle for the runner-up spot.
A stiff and chilly wind from the south west gave many riders issues, particularly in the final half mile to the turn at Shawbirch as the course swung into that wind seeing riders test themselve to see just how much fitness thay had lost since the end of the season. This relaxed event saw a number of riders turn up in fancy dress and riding a variety of machines, not least Dave Moore who rode a vintage 1927 Raleigh Roadster in period costume, finishing in 37:56 and Wrekinsport Chairman Dave Poulter attempting the couse on a knobbly tyred mountain bike stopping the watch on 33:04.
SCCA Private Member Daniel Watts took 3rd spot in a creditable 27:18, just 11 seconds behind Gostelow but which saw off Adrian Billington by seven seconds. Billington's ride was all the better given he lacked a warm up, having to drive home pre-race after forgetting half of his kit !
The welcome sight of two riders from new SCCA member club Market Drayton CC Ade Glover quite at home with a top 10 finish as he took 9th spot in 28:53, whilst Paul Neville took the opportunity to ride his first time trial in 33:49.
Best placed solo lady was Mid Shropshire Wheeler Helen Pritchard, ending the morning on 37:20 to see off the challenge of Tracey Billington, whilst Liz White accompanies Vince Evans on the tandem to cross the line in 28:31.

A great, fun start to the season was had by all. Well done to all who took part.
