Oswestry Paragon CC 2-Up

It was a close call in round 2 of the Hawk Plant 2-Up Series with first place taken by a slim seven second difference at Queen's Head - with the Nova Raiders pairing of  Richard Nickless and Ed Middleton tasting victory in the Oswestry Paragon CC 10 mile event. More known for their leanings towards challenge rides, the club have come out of left field to surprise many, stopping the watch with an excellent effort of 23 minutes 15 seconds to see off a strong challenge from Wrekinsport's Delwyn Jones and Steve Elcocks.

An elated Nickless commented: "We were presented with a testing mix of conditions with the wind and rolling road proving a challenge on our first attempt at the Oswestry course. Strong effort was needed over the first three miles as the road surface and breeze made for a difficult start. However Ed and I are half of the Nova 4-Up 'A' team and regularly train together, so we were very well synchronised". Partner Ed Middleton added: "Taking account of Rich's flying start to the season I knew the pressure was going to be on me and I would be pushed to my limits. It wasn't a pretty race, however being our first 2-Up we did OK"!

It was an intriguing mismatch between Jones and Elcocks, with Jones having managed to find far more time for training putting in a huge effort at the front to finish in 23:22. Elcocks explained: "I did manage to do two turns on the front! My legs feel like lead, all I could do was keep watching Delwyn's legs going up and down and before I knew it we were at the finish. Maybe if I could have done a few more turns on the front and helped out a bit we may have even won, but all in all a pleasing start to the 2-Up Series".

But 4th placed Steve York and Ian Wedge had an unlucky race and were affected by two stops. With the pedestrian crossing at Gobowen unusually occupied this forced a 15 second hold up, whilst in Whittington they had to pull up hard on a fast part of the course with a lorry turning off the A495 blocking their path. These losses saw their time as they crossed the line down to 24:31.

With 17 teams testing themselves in this format four squads featured Junior riders, with Nick Vose and 16 year-old Morgan Hill travelling across from Wales to represent Hafren CC. Their time of 26:27 was good enough for 11th spot overall and pushed out the 13 year-old Mid Shropshire Wheelers' pairing of Martin Whyatt and Adam Aitken by 27 seconds.

The Series lead is split on times, with the North Shropshire Wheelers' pairing of Mark Musgrove and Tom Garbett holding that time advantage over Nickless and Middleton at the top of the table.

With 19 riders in the solo format Oswestry Paragon were delighted with an overall turnout of 53 riders, a large number on a club evening.

Wrekinsport CC Hanna Phipps-Jones 19

Richard Nickless extended his lead at the top of the standings in round 6 of the Parker International Series, Wrekinsport's Hanna Phipps-Jones 19 mile event at Long Lane - but he didn't have things all his own way. Nickless' attention was on North Shropshire Wheelers' Tom Garbett, with the youngster laying in second place overall. Needing to put daylight between himself and fast-improving Junior, the Nova Raider did just that with a great effort of 44 minutes 56 seconds to grab 3rd spot on the evening, whilst Garbett settled for 6th on the day whilst incresing a huge advantage at the top of the Junior Parker Series. This added six points to the difference, with Nickless now having a 14 point advantage, and the battle in future rounds is likely to be a fascinating one.

Exactly a minute ahead of Nickless, Steve York helped himself to 20 points and moved into the Top 10, having the advantage of Garbett as a carrot at the end of the first lap. But York was outpaced himself by another youngster, with Shifnal-based Jordan Bason taking overall victory in 43:39.

There was a change in the Veterans' Series with Nigel Keyworth's ride of 45:56 for 5th spot on the night helped him overtake Oswestry's Neil Coles. Coles just made the Top 10 with a good effort of 47:44, but has an on-fire Steve York breathing down his neck just two points behind.

Wrekinsport incorporated the Hanna Phipps-Jones Handicap within the race, and it was an all female line-up taking the prizes. Amanda Whitmore just snaffled the Gold by 12 seconds ahead of Vicki Bale with an adjusted 38:41, whilst new club member Helen Imrie was buzzing after her first attempt above 10 miles gained her the Bronze medal with a fine adjusted 39:15. Bale and Whitmore also consolidated their 1st and 3rd places in the Parker Ladies Series on the strength of these rides of 54:53 and 52:41 respectively whilst the lady in overall 2nd Tracey Billington was delighted with a personal best 56:11. But it was Emma Dobson who took the win for the Ladies on the night with a superb ride of 51:16 - good enough for 20th place overall amongst a field of 39 riders.
